The Hollow Men (G) Rated: Four Stars
Alister Barry is one of the under-sung heroes of the New Zealand film world. In a lot of countries, the independent director of Someone Else's Country, In a Land of Plenty and A Civilised Society would be regarded as something of a hero, and maybe have a library or three named after him.But in New Zealand, like most documentary makers who produce anything that couldn't comfortably be fronted by Marc Ellis, Barry struggles for funding and screenings. All the more reason then to get along to today's session of The Hollow Men, Barry's latest film.
This is a diligent and unimpeachable re-examination of the events and intrigue that Nicky Hager's best-selling book exposed. Barry's film expands on the book, and also presents a wealth of extra detail and new information relevant to 2008. A sturdy, entertaining, and important film. Go see it.
